The girl looked like she needed a hug, so I gave her a hug – but I didn’t give her the £10 she asked me for. I didn’t want to seem like a pushover in case she laughed about my gullibility when I was gone.

She started crying as she told me what had happened. I noticed the inconsistencies in her story and the alcohol on her breath. I had £20 in my pocket but told her I was broke and in a rush.

Both of us said there was nothing we could do and both of us were lying.
